In most restaurants if you pay with a credit card, the waiter will ask you to close your total by telling him the tip and you can say the percentage. You'd have to wash your hands again or hand the tip before. A tip is also expected there, 5-10 pesos or loose change. If you go to the bathroom at a shopping mall, bar, better restaurant or gas station (it sounds silly that gas stations do the same thing as better restaurants, but it works that way) a guy might be standing there just to hand you the paper towels after you wash your hands. If I don't have at least 5, I rather say sorry than give less.Īnother one, public bathrooms. Handing 1-2 pesos might end up with the receiving person throwing them back at you, depending on the locale. If you were in a hotel in, say, Guanajuato or Morelia, where most clients will be Mexicans, then it will not be expected. Mexicans don't really tip hotel maids, but if you're in a hotel that attracts too many American/Canadian tourists, it might be expected there, because these tourists do it (from what I gather from the forum).
